1. How to Create a New Document and Set Up a Grid

Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, set the Width to 850 px and the Height to 400 px, and then click Advanced Options. Select RGB for the Color Mode and set the Raster Effects to High (300 ppi), and then click the Create button.

Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid or Control-“) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid or Shift-Control-“). You will need a grid every 5 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid, and enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable it using the Control-“ keyboard shortcut.

You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Don’t forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.

2. How to Create the Wings of the Top Gun Logo

Step 1

Pick the Rectangle Tool (L) from your toolbar and then focus on the color settings. Select the stroke and remove the color, and then double-click the fill and replace the existing color with R=255 G=180 B=0.

Move to your artboard and simply create a 640 x 15 px shape—the grid and Snap to Grid should make it easier.

Keep this rectangle selected and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Set the number of Copies to 4 and drag that Move-Vertical slider to 20 px. Click OK to apply the effect, and then go to Object > Expand Appearance to expand it.

Press Shift-Control-G to Ungroup the resulting group of shapes, and then press Control-8 (Object > Compound Path > Make) to easily turn your five rectangles into a single compound path.

Step 2

Focus on the right side of your yellow rectangles, and make sure that the Rectangle Tool (M) is still active.

Use it to create a 75 x 95 px shape and place it exactly as shown in the first image. Create a second one and move it to the left edge of your yellow shapes, as shown below.

Switch to the Delete Anchor Point Tool (-) and use simple clicks to remove the two anchor points highlighted in the first image. This will turn your rectangles into triangles, as shown in the second image.

Step 3

Reselect the Rectangle Tool (M), create a 340 x 65 px shape and place it as shown in the first image. Using the same tool, create a 280 x 15 px shape and place it as shown in the second image.

Step 4

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select all your shapes, open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder), and click the Minus Front button.

3. How to Add Text to Your Top Gun Logo

Step 1

For this tutorial, we’ll create the text from scratch, but if you’re asking, “What font is the Top Gun logo?” this one might be the perfect choice: Top Gun Logo Font.

Let’s see how you can add the text to your Top Gun emblem using basic vector shapes. We’ll start with the first letter. Pick the Rectangle Tool (M), create a 40 x 15 px shape, fill it with blue and place it as shown in the first image. Using the same tool and color, create a 20 x 75 px shape and place it as shown in the second image.

Step 2

Using the Rectangle Tool (M), add the four rectangles that make up the letter “O”, as shown in the first image. Use the grid as a reference to make sure that you’re following the exact size and spacing settings. Remember that the size of a grid box is 5 px.

Continue with the letters “P”, “G” and “U”, and add the sets of rectangles shown in the following images.

Step 3

Finally, for the letter “N” you need to start with two, 20 x 75 px rectangles and place them as shown in the first image. Select the left one and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F).

Focus on the bottom side of this copy and pick the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select both anchor points and simply drag them 30 px to the right, as shown in the second image.

Step 4

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select all your letter shapes and merge them using the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel, and then turn the resulting shapes into a single compound path (Control-8).

Step 5

Focus on the “O” letter shapes and reselect the Rectangle Tool (M). Create four 10 px squares and place them as shown in the first image.

Keep these tiny shapes selected and switch to the Delete Anchor Point Tool (-), and then simply click the highlighted anchor point to remove them.

Step 6

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select your black triangles one by one. Select just the right ones and press Control-C > Control-V to duplicate them. Move the copies on top of your “P” letter shape, as shown in the first image.

Continue with the “G” and “U” letter shapes and add some black triangles as shown below.

Step 7

Select all your black triangles along with the text compound path and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

4. How to Add the Star to Your Top Gun Logo

Step 1

Focus below your “G” letter shape and pick the Rectangle Tool (M). Create a 40 x 60 px shape and place it exactly as shown in the first image. Again, use the grid as a reference.

Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A) and use it to select the top anchor points of your new rectangle. Keep in mind that you need to hold down the Shift key to select more than one anchor point.

Once selected, go to Object > Path > Average (Alt-Control-J). Check that Both box and click OK to easily turn your rectangle into a triangle.

Step 2

Make sure that your triangle is selected and go to Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Using the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the anchor point highlighted below and drag it 15 px up.

Step 3

Reselect the Rectangle Tool (M), create a 70 x 25 px shape and place it as shown in the first image.

Focus on the bottom side of this new rectangle and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Use it to select both anchor points, and go again to Object > Path > Average. Check that Both box and click OK.

Step 4

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select both shapes that make up your star and merge them using the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel.

Step 5

Make sure that your star shape is still selected and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to 10 px and click OK to create a larger star shape.

Step 6

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select your larger star shape along with the yellow shape that lies behind it, and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

5. How to Color the Top Gun Logo

Step 1

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the six shapes highlighted in the first image, and change the fill color to R=255 G=0 B=0.

Select the rest of the shapes and merge them using the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel, turn them into a compound path (Control-8), and then set the fill color to R=204 G=204 B=204.

Step 2

Select all the shapes that make up your logo, press Control-C to copy them, and then press Control-F to add copies in front.

Turn these copies into a compound path (Control-8) and fill it with blue.

Step 3

Disable Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid) and then go to Edit > Preferences > General to make sure that the Keyboard Increment is set to only 1 px.

Select your blue compound path and add two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select just the top copy and press the Down Arrow key once, which will move your selection 1 px down.

Now select both compound path copies added in this step and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Turn the resulting group of shapes into a new compound path (Control-8), fill it with white, and lower its Opacity to 50%.

Step 4

Reselect the remaining blue compound path and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to 10 px and Joins to Round, and then click OK.

Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A) and use it to select one of the anchor points which make up that hole in your shape. Press the Delete key once to remove the selected point, and one more time to get rid of that entire hole.

6. How to Further Stylize Your Top Gun Symbol

Step 1

Make sure that your larger blue shape is still selected, and press Shift-Control-[ to move it behind the rest of your design. Replace the blue with R=43 G=42 B=41, and then go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the settings shown below and click OK.

Step 2

Select the remaining blue compound path and open the Gradient panel (Window > Gradient). Click that Linear Gradient button to replace the flat fill color with a linear gradient.

Set the Angle to 135 degrees and then move to the gradient sliders. Select the white one and set the Location to 40%, and then select the black one and lower its Opacity to 0%. Click the gradient bar to add one more gradient slider and select it. Set the color to black, lower its Opacity to 0%, and drag it to the left end of the gradient bar.

Once you’re done, move to the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance), select the existing fill, and just change its Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Step 3

Make sure that your gradient-filled compound path is still selected, and keep focusing on the Appearance panel. Use Add New Fill to add a second fill and select it.

Set the color to black, lower its Opacity to 15%, change the Blending Mode to Multiply, and then go to Effect > Artistic > Film Grain. Set the settings as shown below and click OK, and then go to Effect > Sketch > Photocopy. Again, enter the attributes shown in the following image and click OK.

7. How to Add a Background for Your Top Gun Logo

Use the Rectangle Tool (M) to create a shape that covers your entire artboard, fill it with R=30 G=156 B=215, and move it behind your Top Gun logo (Shift-Control-[).
